“Veracruz 500 years”

Here is the beginning of our history, which, for five centuries, has forged the character of a people made up of descendants of Europeans and Indians, of Europeans and blacks, of indigenous and blacks, of Creoles and indigenous people and of Creoles and blacks.

A city of people with fiery imagination, of living passions and very given to the pleasures.
That has an affable character and is a lover of democracy; Veracruzanos are poets because the nature that surrounds them is the living poetry that accompanies them.

This town today celebrates the 500th anniversary of its birth with the passion of its Spanish blood, the rhythm of its black heritage and the religiosity of its indigenous roots.

HOLY THURSDAY. APRIL 21 OF 1519

 

They flank eleven ships, five hundred and eighty soldiers and captains, one hundred sailors counting pilots and masters, sixteen horses, ten bronze cannons, four falconets, and thirteen harquebuses, in front of the Islet of San Juan de Ulúa. All of them under the command of the Spanish captain Hernán Cortés.

 

DAY OF SAN JUAN. JUNE 24 OF 1518

 

Captain Juan de Grijalva, accompanied by Antón de Alaminos, Francisco de Montejo, Pedro de Alvarado, and Alonso de Ávila, disembarked on an island within a reef zone; which they baptized as San Juan de Ulúa.

 

When the arrival of the white men to the coasts was known, they began to arrive from the nearest regions, a multitude of natives who brought them gifts and pieces of gold, silver, and jade; due to heat, humidity, and unaccustomed food, most of the soldiers fell ill, so Grijalva ordered to return to Cuba with the obtained riches and the sick soldiers.

 

HOLY FRIDAY. APRIL 22 OF 1519

 

They cross to the mainland, and in the sandy areas of Chalchihuecan they set up a camp, and in the name of Carlos I, king of Spain, they start an expedition of recognition.
